Medellín, the City of the Eternal Spring, knows how to reinvent itself. The former base of Pablo Escobar and current haven of digital nomads, there's much more to do here than visit the sights made famous by Netflix's "Narcos." Learn the holistic history of the city by visiting its museums, like the Museo Casa de la Memoria and the Museo Antioquia. Tour the graffiti walls of Comuna 13 or ride the Metrocable. Walk its beautiful gardens and attend its flower parade. Stay out all night dancing salsa or clubbing in Poblado. Ground yourself in Barefoot Park, and paraglide high above the streets filled with tropical fruit vendors. To truly appreciate it, allow yourself to see this city not just for what it was or what it is, but also for what it's becoming.
Your Packing List
One of the city's most famous festivals, the Fería de las Flores (Flower Festival) will take place this year from Aug. 8-12. If you're planning to take part in the festivities, pack lightweight clothing, sandals, and plenty of sunscreen—August is Medellín's sunniest month, after all.
Spring and fall are the wet seasons: Rain falls almost every day from April to May and from September to November. Be sure to bring a travel umbrella that can fit snugly in your daypack; we recommend the EEZ-Y Compact Travel Umbrella, which measures 11 inches when folded and whose sturdy frame bends with the rain rather than breaking.
Want to give salsa dancing a try? If you're a beginner, you'll want to pack shoes with flexible, anti-slip soles and low heels, like this pair.
Known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World, Churchill, Manitoba is not just a spot to visit for polar bear viewing (best done in November), but also an excellent destination for spotting beluga whales (June to September) and for catching a glimpse of the epic Northern Lights. In addition, this top Canadian destination offers plenty of opportunities for adventure in the form of rock and ice climbing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, and more.
