Let’s break it down with a case study on a recent trade in Zumiez Inc. (ZUMZ).
The Insider Activity
On April 4th, an insider at Zumiez – a retail stock that had been relatively quiet – made a significant purchase of 10,000 shares, for a total investment of $143,000.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time this insider bought stock. They bought another 10,000 shares back in June 2023 at a similar price.
Of course, we don’t know what this insider knew. But we know that when a corporate officer – someone who has intimate knowledge of the company – makes substantial purchases like this, it’s often a strong signal of confidence in the company’s future prospects.
Once we established the opportunity, our traders considered different means of capitalizing on the potential move in ZUMZ.
The Trades
Some decided to buy the stock directly, while others opted for a more leveraged approach by purchasing call options.
- Several students bought ZUMZ shares at the insider price level of $15.77.
- Others bought ZUMZ Aug 20 Calls at $0.55 per contract, choosing to leverage their investment for potentially higher returns.
The Results
Both strategies proved to be highly profitable:
- Those who bought the stock saw it rise to $27.78, for a 76% return on their investment in just four months.
- Those who chose to buy options experienced even greater gains. The options they purchased at $0.55 soared to $7.70, giving them a 1,300% return in the same four-month time period.
The students who participated in this trade had different risk tolerances and investment goals, and they were able to tailor their approach accordingly.
But this case study isn’t about just one successful trade. It’s about the broader lesson that with the right strategy – and by following the right people – you can uncover massively profitable trade opportunities.
