House Speaker Mike Johnson has announced plans for House Republicans to investigate the actions of the now-defunct House Select Committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Johnson criticized the committee for promoting a partisan narrative and accused its members of dishonesty, particularly in their portrayal of former President Trump. He also objected to President Biden's awarding of the Presidential Citizens Medal to former committee members Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson, labeling it as "foolish" and asserting that they lied to the public. Johnson claims the committee manipulated evidence to support a false narrative. A previous report by House Republicans condemned the committee’s efforts as politicized and called for a criminal investigation into Cheney’s role. This new investigation is set to be fully funded and continue into the next Congress, potentially heightening partisan tensions.
