The Democratic Minority Leader has conditionally agreed to support President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” contingent on Trump's commitment to a plan that would reduce costs for Americans. Trump, who is gearing up for his second term, has also proposed expanding U.S. territory and has made other ambitious suggestions like including Greenland, the Panama Canal, and even Canada as part of the U.S. Despite these proposals, he lacks the authority to unilaterally rename the Gulf of Mexico, as it would require international agreement, specifically from the International Hydrographic Organization, of which the U.S. and Mexico are members. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the renaming proposal as a distraction from more pressing issues and stated his cooperation would depend on Trump’s commitment to addressing the cost of living for Americans.
