News Today:
The Department of Homeland Security has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 600,000 Venezuelans and over 230,000 Salvadorans in the U.S. for 18 months. This decision comes as the Biden administration continues to support individuals from countries experiencing crises, allowing them to legally stay in the U.S. The extension also applies to more than 103,000 Ukrainians and 1,900 Sudanese. TPS, however, does not offer a path to permanent residency or citizenship and requires periodic renewal. The extension is crucial for individuals like JosΓ© Palma, a Salvadoran in the U.S. since 1998, and Victor Macedo, a Venezuelan facing threats in his homeland due to political activism. As President-elect Trump prepares to take office, the future of TPS remains uncertain, given his previous attempts to limit the program.
