Republican lawmakers are increasingly frustrated with the Trump administration’s failure to deliver new trade agreements, despite earlier promises. Instead of finalizing deals, the administration has imposed or threatened steep new tariffs on 14 countries, including key allies like Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia. Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) criticized the strategy, warning that ongoing uncertainty is harmful to the economy and could hurt Republicans politically. He pointed out that no formal trade agreements—with enforcement and dispute resolution—have been completed, even with close partners like the U.K. Tillis argued that the administration’s broad, tariff-heavy approach lacks structure and may drive other nations away from the negotiating table.
