Perhaps unsurprisingly, Apple TV's Severance led the pack with 27 nods, but it will face some tough competition in this year's particularly stacked drama category. Supervillain series The Penguin was close behind Severance with 24 nominations, followed by The Studio and The White Lotus, both with 23. FDA Approves Natural Blue Food Additive for Use in Candy and Drinks

In recent months, a palette of new color additives derived from natural sources has gained approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. And on Monday, one more made the list: a blue-hued dye from the fruit of gardenias, a flowering evergreen. Called Gardenia Blue, the additive can be used in a variety of beverages (e.g., sports drinks, ready-to-drink teas, and fruit drinks) as well as hard and soft candy, the FDA said in the announcement. An alternative to synthetic chemical dyes, the blue pigment is made by extracting a compound called genipin from crushed gardenia fruit and combining it with soy protein. The other newly approved natural colors are galdieria extract (also blue), calcium phosphate (white), and butterfly pea flower extract (blues, purples, and greens) — all of which are part of a larger initiative to make it easier for manufacturers to phase out petroleum-based dyes in the nation's food supply.

After Texas Floods, Good Samaritans Are Stepping Up to Reunite Lost Pets With Owners

Amid the devastation caused by the Texas floods, acts of kindness are shining through. To give one such example, volunteers in the city of Kerrville are working diligently to reunite lost pets — like this adorable puppy dropped off in a box — with their owners. "Right now, we're kind of the first responders for animals," Karen Guerriero, president and co-founder of Kerrville Pets Alive, told NPR, adding: "This is a retirement community, so for many people here, their pet is their most important thing." Last week, Guerriero said the shelter's team had reunified 25 pets with their families, but many more were still waiting to go back into the loving arms of their people, per NBC Texas affiliate KXAN. Good Samaritans are even making the trek from other parts of the state to lend a helping hand. Sherry Sweeney drove five hours from Austin to help catch lost cats, often found hiding in the rubble. Novel Treatments to Reverse Hair Loss Are in the Works

By age 35, 66% of U.S. men experience noticeable hair loss, according to the American Hair Loss Association — and only two licensed drugs are FDA-approved to treat male and female pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia: minoxidil and finasteride. But some promising recent research breakthroughs are offering hope for more effective alternatives. Earlier this year, scientists at UCLA shared that ongoing lab work had identified a molecule, dubbed PP405, that can "wake up" dormant stem cells in hair follicles. Then in June, Pelage Pharmaceuticals announced the results of a randomized clinical trial testing a topical treatment with PP405. Participants applied it to their scalps once a day for four weeks, leading to a "rapid and statistically significant clinical response," per a news release. "Despite affecting millions, hair loss has seen remarkably little progress in clinical research," said Arash Mostaghimi, vice chair of clinical trials and innovation at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "What's compelling about PP405 is that it brings scientific rigor to a space that's needed it for decades. A well-tolerated, topically delivered therapy that shows measurable biological activity this early is rare. This could reshape how we think about clinical progress in hair growth." Tucked in a Boston neighborhood, a "not mail" box is open for strangers to share their hopes, secrets, and musings on anything their heart desires. "I didn't quite expect the really heartfelt notes," said Jean Powers, who started the project during the pandemic. She added: "What sort of person would go through the trouble of writing this beautiful poem and doing this gorgeous watercolor only to leave it in the 'not mail' box of a total stranger without knowing whatever's going to happen to it? Like, what a gorgeous humanity we are."
