The move shows continued support at a critical level following the previous week's sell-off and indicates a high likelihood that new highs will be set soon. The question is how soon a new high will be set, and it could be before the New Year. The holiday season typically brings a year-end rally, and there are reasons to buy this year. Among them are fundamentally strong economic conditions and an outlook for accelerating earnings growth in 2025.
The first big hurdle for the market in 2025 will come in the second week of the new trading year. The monthly labor data, including the NFP report, are due and may not show the same robust conditions the market has come to expect. The latest jobless claims figures showed an alarming spike in total claims, which may indicate a negative shift in the employment market.
