We tested over 150 pieces of luggage in July. Here are the highlights.
| TRAVEL DEALS | | These Carry-On Backpacks Aced Our Luggage Lab Test | We jokingly called it Luggapalooza during meetings. In our world, it wasn't far off from the famed Chicago music festival. Instead of spending multiple days watching some of the best musical acts, our team of testers and editors spent multiple days testing some of the best luggage in our New York City testing lab.
The result is the most robust luggage test we've ever completed. We tested under-seat luggage, carry-on luggage, checked baggage, and carry-on backpacks totaling nearly 150 different luggage items. Two carry-on backpacks aced our tests, which involved packing and unpacking bags, evaluating them for design features, wearing them around our lab for comfort testing, and chucking them around to assess durability.
Our testers rated each piece of luggage on a five-point scale for the following attributes: capacity, design, comfort, durability, and overall value. We averaged those scores to give each piece of luggage its final overall score. These two carry-on backpacks earned a perfect "5." | | - Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack: I was personally pleased to see this pack come out on top. It's been my favorite travel pack for years. And to have that validated through our lab testing confirmed what I already believed to be true: The Cotopaxi Allpa is as close to a perfect overall travel pack as you can find now. Our testers simply loved everything about this pack, from its suitcase-like opening to its many strategic pockets and organizational capability to its extreme comfort and ruggedness. Or, as one tester concluded: "I LOVE THIS BACKPACK."
- Osprey Fairview 40 Women's Travel Pack: Also notching the perfect score was Osprey's Fairview pack. This was a bit of a surprise for me, especially considering the men's version (Farpoint 40) didn't score quite as well. But overall, Osprey probably makes more consistently great backpacking backpacks and hiking daypacks than any other brand. So it's not totally surprising our testers loved multiple carrying points, comfy straps, and carrying capacity.
| | These two packs are the perfect travel companions for hopping a quick flight, road-tripping, hostel hopping, or gear storage. They come rigorously tested and highly recommended by us.
