New Zealand's upcoming re-opening has us dreaming big.
Destination of the Day
Charleston, South Carolina
This 17th-century port city offers a bit of everything to visitors: stunning architecture, world-class dining, historic charm, natural beauty. Yes, tourists flock to the city for its candy-colored Georgian homes of Rainbow Row, the intoxicating cobblestones streets, lush landscapes, and towering church spires that give Charleston its "Holy City" moniker—but the city also has a thoroughly modern vibe, with galleries, restaurants, and recreational activities that cater to locals and visitors alike. Weather-wise, the best time to visit Charleston is in the spring, when magnolia trees and flowers are in full bloom and temperatures are ideal. Here's how to plan your trip.
Things to Do
History buffs will enjoy a walking tour or a trip to the Charleston Museum, the Fort Sumter National Monument, or Patriot's Point Naval & Maritime Museum, while the South Carolina Aquarium is a must for families. Arts aficionados will want to explore the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, and Charleston Music Hall. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to take a beach day to enjoy activities like biking, boating, and golf in nearby areas like Kiawah Island and Isle of Palms. For a few weeks in April and May, tour some of the city's finest private homes and gardens at the annual Festival of Houses and Gardens. It also includes culinary demonstrations, walking tours, and musical performances.
Where to Eat and Drink
Charleston is a hot spot for seafood and Low Country-inspired cuisine. Located in a former 1920s-era bank, The Ordinary is a haven for seafood and oyster lovers, while its sister restaurant FIG offers a tight menu of seasonally-inspired protein and vegetable dishes. Other standout restaurants include soul food classic Bertha's Kitchen and the much-lauded Husk. For bars, King Street and its adjacent streets downtown are home to several of the city's best. Visit the Bar at Husk for its extensive bourbon collection, The Gin Joint for its namesake spirit-inspired cocktails, and The Living Room at The Dewberry Hotel for a post-dinner nightcap in midcentury luxury.
Where to Shop
Whether you want to explore the bustling stretch of King Street, the luxury brands of the Shops at Belmond Charleston Place, or the historic Charleston City Market, the city has a variety of retail options for every budget, taste, and style. Pro tip: On the second Sunday of every month, the city shuts down vehicular traffic on King Street so shoppers can enjoy patio dining, live music, and browsing through shops without dodging cars.
Your Packing List
Spring days are often warm, but nights can be chilly, especially in March and April. Pack light clothing that can be layered along with a jacket.
While spring is generally dry, you may want an umbrella in case of occasional showers.
Probably Sri Lanka's most iconic and recognizable landmark, Sigiriya (translating to "Lion's Rock" in Sinhalese), is a 5th-century fort and palace. As you climb the 1,217 steps to the top of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll learn about the previous inhabitants of the rock, walk between a pair of giant, carved lion's paws, pass by ancient paintings created by monks, and ultimately be rewarded with sprawling views of the valley below.
