New Zealand just announced that it will reopen its borders on May 1, two months sooner than expected.
Destination of the Day
Boston
Irish pubs, Irish history, Irish spirit, and a parade that's been a tradition for more than a century: Boston is America's best destination if you want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with gusto. Many themed events are scheduled in the city during the weeks surrounding March 17, including concerts, corned beef dinners, Boston Celtics home games, and major celebrations like those hosted by Harpoon Brewery and the Irish Cultural Centre of New England
Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade
The highlight of the festivities is always the annual Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade, a South Boston tradition that dates back 121 years and brings in millions of spectators a year. In 2022, the parade is scheduled for Sunday, March 20. Be sure to get there early to reserve your spot as the streets get crowded!
Boston Irish Heritage Trail
A tour of the 20 sites on downtown Boston's Irish Heritage Trail is an intriguing way to see the city. Like the Freedom Trail, which is many first-time visitors' introduction to Boston, the Irish Heritage Trail connects thematically related sights. From the Rose Kennedy Garden to the Boston Irish Famine Memorial, follow this map from the Boston Irish Tourism Association for help planning a self-guided outing.
Where to Drink
While you'll definitely want to head to South Boston for the city's annual St. Patrick's Day parade, Southie is not the only place you'll find Irish pubs. Downtown Boston, including popular tourist areas like Faneuil Hall, has plenty to choose from that are convenient to get to and worth checking out during your trip. Bars throughout the city close at 2 a.m., so keep that in mind as you plan out your night.
Your Packing List
March can be a tease because it's technically the kick-off of spring, but recent years have brought mid-month snowstorms. Pack your winter coat and snow boots, just in case.
Keep in mind that "mud season" often begins by the late part of March, so if you'll be spending time outdoors, bring clothes and boots with sloppy terrain in mind.
Even if you get lucky and visit during a warm spell, evenings and nights are still cold, so you won't regret packing those extra layers and heavy socks.
Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga, lures those seeking knowledge and peace with its numerous ashrams and yoga institutes. Located in India's northern state of Uttarakhand, the town's lanes and alleys retain an old-world charm despite the growing number of visitors, and it remains a wonderful place to relax and unwind among nature.
