Destination of the Day
Delhi
Today is Holi, and special events with music, rain dances, and colors are traditionally organized in large cities across India—particularly in Delhi. At the Holi Moo Festival, attendees celebrate the Hindu god of preservation, Lord Vishnu, with color and moozik. The event hosts 40 Indian and international performers spread over four stages, while non-toxic colors, bhang lassi, street food, and sprinklers are provided to get everyone in the mood. If you're staying anywhere near Paharganj in Central Delhi, be prepared to be covered in color by shopkeepers and children if you step outside.
Things to Do
The city is dotted with spellbinding mosques, forts, and monuments left over from the Mughal rulers that once occupied the city. The contrast between Old Delhi and New Delhi is immense, and it's interesting to spend time exploring both, from Red Fort to Connaught Place. If you feel in need of some relaxation, just head to one of Delhi's flourishing landscaped gardens. The capital also has some of the best markets in India, making it sought-after for shopping. To explore the city on foot, try a walking tour.
What to Eat
Delhi is renowned for both its street food and fine dining restaurants. Rich, meat-dominated Mughlai and Punjabi cuisines are most prevalent. They were established in the city when Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan set up his capital in the 17th century, and when people migrated from the Punjab region following The Partition of India in 1947. The popularity of modern Indian cuisine has grown in Delhi in recent years, with new restaurants using innovative cooking techniques and global ingredients.
Where to Stay
Delhi has a wide range of accommodations to suit all budgets. Backpackers usually head to the Paharganj district near New Delhi Railway Station. However, backpacker hostels and budget hotels can be found in other areas of the city. Connaught Place and Karol Bagh are convenient central city locations, while South Delhi is an upper-class residential area that's more peaceful. Many of Delhi's B&Bs (often called homestays) are located in South Delhi. The luxury hotels are generally clustered around the affluent Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave and Connaught Place.
Your Packing List
Spring days are brilliantly sunny and warm, with nighttime temperatures generally above 50 degrees F. Pack light wools and clothes that you can layer.
Isolated patches of rain and hail do still occur, so stash an umbrella in your suitcase.
Due to smog, it's recommended that you wear a suitable anti-pollution mask on the days that air quality is deemed unsafe, or if you have respiratory issues such as asthma or bronchitis.
A tiny island just off the coast of Punta del Este, Uruguay, Isla de Lobos holds the world's second-largest southern sea lion colony (about 1,500) and one of the tallest lighthouses in South America. The island, part of the protected Coastal Islands National Park, can only be visited by boat tour; though tours don't stop on the island, the boat anchors off the shore, allowing attendees to swim with the playful sea lions.
