Human connection is something we've all been craving over the past two years.
Destination of the Day
Louisville, Kentucky
Held each year on the first Saturday of May, the Kentucky Derby brings hundreds of thousands of spectators to Louisville for the big race. But Kentucky Derby festivities aren't limited to the race itself, as many of the related celebrations happen around town before and after the main event. Even if you're not the betting type, though, there are still plenty of other things to do in Louisville that make Kentucky's largest city a wonderful place to be this time of year.
Visit the Home of Jim Beam
A must-visit on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a trip to the Jim Beam American Stillhouse allows you to experience the making and history of one of Kentucky's signature products. The original distillery and home of founder Jim Beam are located in Clermont, about 30 minutes outside of downtown Louisville, but totally worth the drive for lovers of spirits. Here you can watch a video about the history of the Beam family, view the bourbon-making process first-hand, and see how the brand's bottle art has changed throughout the years.
Enjoy the Beauty of the Cave Hill Cemetery
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Cave Hill Cemetery is a Victorian-era cemetery and arboretum that draws people in with its lovely scenery and intricately designed gravestones. The landscape is incredibly photogenic and is home to a cave, several lakes, and the graves of many famous Louisvillians, including Muhammad Ali and Kentucky Fried Chicken founder, Colonel Sanders.
Walk the Big Four Bridge
The Big Four Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that links Louisville's waterfront park to Jeffersonville, Indiana, offering stunning views of the Ohio River below. This popular attraction begins in the scenic park, where you can view the city's Vietnam Memorial. The Big Four Bridge dates back to the end of the 19th century when it was originally built as a railroad bridge for both freight and passengers. Today, the bridge serves only pedestrians and cyclists and is open 24 hours a day. Take a stroll at night when the bridge is illuminated with the vibrant colors of its specialized LED lighting system.
Your Packing List
May is the wettest month, with an average of 4.6 inches of rain. Don't forget to pack an outer rain shell or umbrella.
Even though Derby attire is generally sundresses and big hats for women and pastel-colored suits for men, keep in mind that the infield Derby Party tends to get messy—if it's raining or has rained recently, expect to be walking through mud. Comfortable clothing is the most important dress code, and make sure you wear something you don't mind getting dirty. Over-the-top outfits and Derby-inspired costumes are always encouraged.
Collapsable chairs and tarps that are smaller than 10 feet by 10 feet are allowed at the Derby Party. If you bring nothing to sit on, you may be stuck sitting in the mud or standing all day.
The story of Belize's Great Blue Hole is complicated, and requires a great deal of historical perspective—specifically, about 150,000 years' worth! The hole has been formed gradually over time, and features several concentric ledges, bottoming out somewhere around 400 feet beneath the surface. Of course, geology will be the last thing on your mind as you approach the Great Blue Hole, which sits about 45 miles off the coast of mainland Belize in the Lighthouse Reef Formation. Instead, you'll be astounded by just how blue these waters are!
