Destination of the Day
Okinawa, Japan
Life on the subtropical islands of Okinawa is so different from life on mainland Japan, it has its own distinct culture, food, and dialect. And with the islands boasting some of the best beaches, diving opportunities, and coastal scenery in Asia, a trip here ranks among our favorite things to do in Japan.
Keramashoto National Park
There are about two dozen islands surrounding Okinawa. The Kerama Islands, an archipelago of approximately 30 islands, are surrounded by healthy coral reefs and a diverse ecosystem that makes for perfect diving and snorkeling adventures. With pine forests, sheer cliffs, and mountains, the landscape offers an endless amount of photo spots and hiking options. Many of the islands are inhabited, so you'll find hotels, restaurants, and tour agencies in this subtropical paradise.
Emerald Beach
Think you have to take a flight or ferry from Okinawa's main island to find an incredible beach? Think again. While not as famous as Kabira Bay on Ishigaki, the main island's Emerald Beach is every bit as beautiful. As an added bonus, it's not far from Churaumi Aquarium, which is one of the Naha attractions you're likely to visit anyway. Come here between April and October for the best swimming conditions, but keep in mind that since Okinawa is tropical, rain showers can occur at any time.
Opened in 1753, the Old Town Farmers' Market in Alexandria, Virginia is said to be the oldest farmers' market continuously held in one place. In fact, it's so old, produce from George Washington's farm at Mount Vernon was actually sold here back in the day. Nowadays, you can visit and shop on Saturday mornings outside Alexandria City Hall from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
