Destination of the Day
Phoenix, Arizona
The nation's fifth-largest city, Phoenix has been an escape for the rich, famous, and winter-weary since The Wigwam and the Arizona Biltmore opened in 1929. While these resorts and others like them still lure visitors with sprawling swimming pools and championship golf courses, Phoenix and the Greater Phoenix area—known collectively as the Valley of the Sun—offer so much more.
Things to Do
Phoenix is known for the amazing Sonoran Desert that surrounds it, but there's more to do than pose with a saguaro or take in some rays at the pool. You can explore the Valley's world-class museums (including one dedicated solely to musical instruments) or visit incredible attractions such as architect Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home. History buffs can learn about the native people and early settlers who paved the way for the city we enjoy today, while sports fans can cheer for their favorite professional players. Here's how to see the best of the best in two days.
What to Eat and Drink
For decades, steakhouses and mom-and-pop Mexican restaurants dominated the Phoenix food scene. Not anymore. Today's chefs bring globally-inspired flavors to their menus and serious culinary skills. But navigating the city's food scene can be a little tricky with as many options as there are now. From resort restaurants to casual favorites, check out some of our favorite restaurants when you visit. The Valley also has an impressive craft beer scene, with some of its breweries recognized as the best in the nation.
Day Trips From Phoenix
While there may be plenty to keep visitors busy in Phoenix, consider planning a day trip from the bustling capital. Whether it's Tucson, with its multicultural heritage and cacti-clad desert, or Sedona, with its vortexes and brighter-than-fire buttes, some of Arizona's most beloved attractions are just a couple hours' drive away.
Your Packing List
You won't need a sweater or jacket in the spring, but a long-sleeve T-shirt or sweatshirt can come in handy if a rainy day brings slightly cooler temps.
During the spring, the weather is warm enough for swimming, so pack a swimsuit!
If you're traveling over the summer, lightweight clothing is a must. Look for breathable fabrics that wick away moisture.
Few global sites meld natural and human-made wonder more dramatically than the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey, situated at the border between Normandy and Brittany in northern France. Built between the late 10th and 16th centuries, the Romanesque abbey impossibly towers atop a rocky islet, overlooking a bay and its powerful tidal systems. These make the abbey and its surrounding, watery landscapes appear dramatically different depending on the time of day and quality of the light.
