Destination of the Day
Acadia National Park
Whether you're a U.S. national parks fan looking to "collect" the best of the best or an outdoor enthusiast bound for Maine, Acadia National Park should rank high on your list of must-visit destinations. And with all its natural beauty and opportunities for adventure, it's no wonder. Read on to discover some of the top things to do.
Hike Some 150 Miles of Trails
Hiking is so abundant in Acadia National Park that entire books exist on the subject. There are 150 miles of identified trails within the park, so whether you're up for a casual stroll or a challenging climb, you'll find options at the extremes and everywhere in between. For beginner-level hikers, some of the best bets include the 1.4-mile Wonderland Trail, which leads through pine forest to the rocky coast in Southwest Harbor, and the 3.4-mile Jordan Pond Loop Trail.
Watch the Sunrise
Join the early sunrise watchers atop Cadillac Mountain, one of the first spots in the U.S. to greet the sun each day and the highest mountain in the park at 1,530 feet. If you're planning to visit from mid-May to mid-October, note that you will need a timed vehicle reservation to drive Cadillac Summit Road, which will take you right up to the peak. Thirty percent of reservations will be released three months ahead of each date, while the rest will be made available two days prior to your trip, at 10 a.m. ET. Vehicle reservations can be made at Recreation.gov.
Get Your Feet Wet at Sand Beach
Sand Beach is a mandatory detour at Acadia National Park. Aim to arrive early in the morning on summer days; otherwise, you may struggle to find a parking space. Even when temperatures climb in July and August, the Atlantic Ocean remains jarringly cold this far north. But this crushed seashell beach is one of the most stunning you may ever behold.
Your Packing List
The weather in Maine can be unpredictable, and even summer nights can be surprisingly chilly. When you're out on the water, it's automatically cooler, too. You will not regret tossing that extra sweatshirt or fleece jacket in your car or carry-on.
If you're taking to the trails, pack a sturdy pair of hiking boots.
Bring some bug spray to keep the mosquitos and black flies at bay.
One of India's top historical destinations, the laid-back village of Hampi was once the last capital of Vijayanagar, one of the greatest Hindu empires in India's history. It has some extremely captivating ruins, intriguingly intermingled with large boulders that rear up all over the landscape. The ruins, which date back to the 14th century, stretch for just over 16 square miles and comprise more than 1600 monumental remains.
