I'll be honest. I was never a big fan of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a kid—mostly because I didn't like jam or jelly. It was a texture and sweetness thing, I think. But times have definitely changed. I love, love, love me a sexy, adult rendition of PB&J now. And because today is the day of all days to enjoy one, I'm sharing my idea of a perfectly-crafted PB&J sandwich with all of you.
 
It starts with a super soft, slightly sweet bread—like brioche or this milk and honey bread. I believe in crunchy nut butter supremacy, so I love adding extra chopped peanuts and a sprinkle of sea salt to my (ideally homemade) peanut butter. I'm into all kinds of jams now, but I have yet to try one I like more than this fig jam. It's the perfect amount of sweet, thick yet still spreadable, and super easy to make. Sometimes I'll have it just like that, cut diagonally (crucial). But I typically prefer to heat my sandwich in a skillet with a tiny bit of butter to achieve a crispy, golden crust (the way you would with a grilled cheese). It adds a bit more of that crunchiness I love and melts the peanut butter and jam into a gooey, rich confection. This? This is the stuff of my PB&J dreams.
 
I recently read that Lambrusco is the best wine to have with PB&J. It's Saturday night, and I really can't think of anything I'd rather do.
 
If you're in the mood for more grown-up versions of your childhood favorites, get into these nuggets marinated in spicy yogurt or these Arizona street-cart staple hot dogs. Try our pizza pull apart bread or some air fryer mac and cheese balls. Then use that leftover fig jam from your PB&J for these homemade pop tarts or to spread on these easy and delicious soft pretzels.
