Winter (June to August) sees mild, dry days with abundant sunshine, but you should still pack long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a jacket.
Spring (September to November) is an extremely pleasant time to visit South Africa. Your packing list for spring should include lightweight and comfy clothing, as well as a jacket or sweater for the occasional chilly day. Don't forget sunscreen—the sun in South Africa is harsh year-round.
If you're planning to go on safari in Pilanesberg National Park, bring binoculars to see the Big Five up close, in addition to a pair of lightweight walking shoes or hiking boots.
Only appearing every third or fourth summer, massive lily pads—called Yacare Yrupe—float atop Paraguay's Cerro Lagoon and measure five to eight feet in diameter. Tourists pose for pics on the dock, or hire canoes to get up close to the plants, which are reminiscent of giant belly-up frisbees. Though formerly listed as endangered, the lily pads have regenerated and multiplied in force recently, after conservation efforts successfully counteracted years of dredging, looting by tourists, and rogue tea makers.
