| | | | | | | Why I Can't Stop Talking About My Favorite Pair of Travel Shoes | There was a point in time, some 10 or so years ago, when I thought I could pull off non-sneakers while traveling. Naive and unexposed to the consequences of having high arches and bunions (cute), I'd opt for heeled boots, wedges, strappy sandals—you get the idea. It didn't take long for me to realize that one blister is too many blisters, and arriving at my destination with sore feet is a recipe for crankiness. Since then, I've resigned myself to the fact that a good pair of sneakers is, without dispute, the best type of shoe to wear while traveling.
Of course, you could fill up every suitcase in the world with all the different kinds of sneakers available. So I've narrowed it down to just a couple pairs that I deem fit for it all, whether you're white-knuckling it through a crowded airport, stuck on an 18-hour flight, or strolling for hours in an unfamiliar city.
Hoka One One Clifton: I've written about this shoe a silly number of times because it has been my closest travel companion for years. (I once heard that wearing Hokas is akin to walking on a cloud, and I'm here to tell you that this old adage is true.) The brand describes the shoe as having "energetic foam" and it really does feel that way; there's just enough support and bounce from the sole to make walking for hours comfortable. Plus, they're incredibly lightweight and can slip on and off easily, ideal for whizzing through security or cozying up for a long flight.
Adidas NMD_R1: Adidas: These are my OG go-to travel sneakers. They're lightweight, stylish, and incredibly comfortable. I love them for the tailored fit (like socks!) and super-grip outsole (perfect for slippery rainy days), as well as the cushion that the midsole provides. Adidas' most recent version of this shoe is made with a high-performance, recycled material called Primeblue, which is an added bonus.
