Representative Greg Steube of Florida introduced a bill called the Make Autorail Great Again Act, which would cut all federal funding to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) unless it renames itself to the Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access (WMAGA) and rebrands its Metrorail system as the “Trump Train.” The proposal, though unlikely to pass, is part of a broader trend among some Republicans to name public infrastructure after Donald Trump. Steube framed the bill as a push for government accountability and cultural reform, not just a symbolic gesture. He linked the effort to previous cost-cutting initiatives under Elon Musk's now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency. WMATA currently receives $150 million annually in federal support and serves nearly 200 million riders per year. The agency has been undergoing modernization and safety reforms under current leadership, but has not yet responded to the proposed legislation.
