Despite the park's name, terra firma accounts for less than 1% of the 100-square-mile site, located 70 miles off the coast of Key West. One thing you will find? Turtles. Explorer Ponce de LeΓ³n originally called the area Las Tortugas (Spanish for "The Turtles") because of how many of the sea creatures he saw swimming in the water. It's no different today, with five turtle species mingling among the park's many other flora and fauna — including nearly 300 bird species. The park's seven small islands are accessible only by boat or seaplane, which makes it one of the country's least-visited national parks.
