| | | | | | The Head-to-Toe Must-Haves for Summer Adventures, According to an Outdoorsy Vermonter | For me, summer in Vermont means two things: mud season is over (bless up), and I'm going to spend as much time outdoors as I can. There will be some rainy days, the mosquitos and black flies will do their worst, and that signature East Coast humidity will descend upon us sometime mid-summer—but I don't care. You'll find me in my backyard on a mountain, trail running, or swimming from June through September. Vermonters are lucky in that we have relatively mild summers, but wherever you find yourself in the U.S., you're likely to spend some time outside (hopefully a lot!) over the next few months—and you'll want to be equipped with the right gear to stay cool and comfortable. Sun protection is always top-of-mind, and I turn to Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen for my face and the Sun Bum SPF 50 Original Spray for my body. I typically keep a baseball cap in my bag at all times and find a way to attach my sunglasses to my body when they aren't on my face (right now I'm wearing these polarized sunnies from KREWE, but have my eyes on the armless sunglasses from Ombraz). I usually wear light cotton or linen tees when outside or traveling in warm weather, but if I need something a bit more technical and sweat-wicking, I'll wear a Patagonia Capilene Cool tee. For outer layers, keeping a good fleece on-hand is key, and Patagonia's Nano Puff line of vests and jackets is pretty hard to beat for something a bit warmer. In terms of inclimate weather, I tend toward Mountain Hardwear's Exposure/2 shell to stay dry. Those taking to the mountains for cycling should invest in well-crafted, sweat-wicking bike shorts. I love these shorts from female-founded Machines of Freedom (very much worth the investment). If I'm hiking or trail running, I pretty much always opt for Outdoor Voices 5" Flex Shorts or the brand's popular Exercise Dress (which is especially great if you're transitioning to evening drinks after). I currently live in this Lululemon bra for all types of exercise. When camping, I'll wear the Kavu Elle Short or classic Patagonia Baggies to stay cool and ready to move around. When hiking, you can't go wrong with boots from Danner, a legacy brand with a huge following for a reason (this is my go-to pair). If you're more of a trail runner, Hoka One One Speedgoats are unbeatable for comfort, speed, and versatility. And if you just plan to do a lot of walking in cities, check out Hoka's Clifton, a lifestyle shoe available in a ton of colors. And after a long day of adventuring, I like to slip into Teva sandals and some cozy pants like these joggers from Mate the Label.
