Sustainable travel doesn't have to be synonymous with luxury; in fact, traveling sustainably is often cheaper.
Destination of the Day
Australia
Due to its location in the Southern Hemisphere, March in Australia means the arrival of the fall season, making it one of the best times to visit this island continent. And now that it's fully reopen to vaccinated travelers, we're itching to book our flights ASAP. From snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef to touring Sydney's Opera House, here are the top things to do Down Under.
Explore a World-Class City
The nation's most popular destination for overseas visitors, Sydney attracts travelers with dozens of spectacular beaches, a glittering harbor, buzzing restaurants, and a mean flat white. If you're in need of a natural escape, the city is surrounded by national parks, reserves, and gardens full of hikes and scenic views. And if you're a self-proclaimed theater geek, a night at the Opera House cannot be beat.
Visit the Northern Territory
When you picture Australia's Northern Territory, landscapes like Uluru, Kakadu, and Kings Canyon probably come to mind. Unlike the East Coast, this sparsely populated region is known more for its parks and reserves than its cities and beaches, from the impressive waterfalls of the Top End to the striking rock formations of the Red Centre. Can't decide where to go? We recommend Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, home to one of Australia's most iconic landmarks: the 1,142-foot-tall Ayers Rock (Uluru).
Taste Australia's Wine Regions
Australia's location in the Southern Hemisphere makes it a prime location for producing wine, and there's no better time to visit the country's famed wine regions than during harvest season. Visit Hunter Valley, Australia's oldest wine region, and hop between 150-plus cellar doors before touring the region by hot air balloon. Or, sip Barossa shiraz and Eden Valley riesling in the South Australia's acclaimed Varossa Valley.
Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef
There are dozens of ways to experience the world's largest coral reef, depending on the time you have available, your interests and your budget. A day trip to Green Island is a great option for beginners, while honeymooners and luxury travelers may opt for a stay on one of the region's tropical islands.
Your Packing List
Traveling to the northern parts of the country? Be sure to pack waterproof shoes, a raincoat, and an umbrella. Warm-weather clothing, like shorts, T-shirts, and a bathing suit, is also a must.
Those visiting southern Australia may want to bring a light jacket or sweater since temperatures can drop 10 to 20 degrees overnight.
Legend has it, the two basalt columns on Iceland's Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach—which collectively are called Reynisdranga—are actually two Icelandic trolls who once attempted to drag a ship from the sea onto land. They couldn't get the ship in before the daylight broke, turning them both into stone.
