Spice up the holidays with a little jazz when local big band sensation, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, presents "Holiday Swing" Nov. 23 at the Charleston Music Hall. Contemporary art showcase. Columbia's 701 Center for Contemporary Art presents its inaugural "SC Biennial 2011." View works by 24 artists currently producing some of the most exciting contemporary art in the state in a wide range of media including painting, drawing, collage, photo transfer, prints, sculpture, crafts and more. Natalie Daise, star of Nickelodeon's "Gullah Gullah Island," portrays former slave and quilt maker Harriet Powers in "Quilting the Sun," a play inspired by the Powers quilt currently hanging in the Smithsonian Institution. Presented by ARTworks in Beaufort, the performance runs Nov. 10-13 and Nov. 17-20. It is accompanied by a collection of story quilts created by Powers-inspired contemporary quilter, Dorothy Montgomery. For more information, click here. The sound of "new grass." The Grascals bring their creative "new grass" music to the Newberry Opera House Nov. 13. The 2010 Bluegrass Band of the Year has an innovative take on a classic sound.
