Explore the world of folk and traditional art at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. Uncommon Folk features rarely exhibited items from the museum's collection, including Native American earthenware, turkey calls and decoys, shrimp nets, toys, wood carvings, whimsical whirligigs, and a flat-bottomed boat by Willie DeReef, the last of the Gullah boat makers. This remarkable exhibit runs through January 15, 2012. History comes alive. Take a journey into the past to meet five people whose ideas changed America. From June 17-23, the Chautauqua Festival will feature 20 interactive theater performances throughout Greater Greenville and downtown Spartanburg. Ask questions and stand witness as history is brought to life by nationally known interpreters performing as John Muir, Albert Einstein, Frances Perkins, W.E.B. DuBois and Mark Twain. The museum's permanent collection boasts more than 150 works of art illustrating the rich and vibrant history of the Lowcountry. The exhibition highlights significant people, places and periods from Charleston's beginning as a British colony to the culturally diverse and dynamic city we know today. Gullah/Geechee traditions. Immerse yourself in Gullah/Geechee cultural traditions handed down for generations at the Sweetgrass Festival in Mt. Pleasant, June 4. Activities include arts and crafts, African drumming, vocal performances, dance, storytelling, and basket-making demonstrations. And don't you dare miss the showcase of sweetgrass baskets! A blooming good time! Enjoy art along with nature's beauty at the South Carolina Festival of Flowers in Greenwood, June 4-29.
