The Smithsonian in Gaffney
Gaffney is the first stop on the South Carolina tour of the Smithsonian Institution's New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music. The exhibition explores the distinct cultural identities of music that shaped America through photographs, recordings, instruments, lyrics and artist profiles. Enjoy more than 25 free programs including concerts, singalongs and instrument-making workshops for children. The exhibition runs April 9 - May 29 at the Gaffney Visitor's Center and Arts Gallery before moving to other S.C. communities.

Film plus crafts in Columbia
Take in a wide variety of independent films at the Indie Grits Film Festival in Columbia April 13-17. Hosted by the Nickelodeon art house theater, this juried festival includes documentaries, short films and feature-length films by first-time and experienced Southern filmmakers. On April 16, be sure to check out the handmade - and occasionally quirky - crafts at the Crafty Feast, a juried craft fair, where music and food are also part of the fun.

The world comes to Florence!
Japanese Taiko drumming, Afro-Latino dance, an oompah band and a fire and hula show are just a few of the performances on tap when artists from the U.S. and abroad gather at Francis Marion University April 9 for Florence Arts International. Enjoy a range of musical styles - from blues to brass - while you sample exotic food and shop for original works of art.

A weekend of jazz
The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County celebrates Jazz at the Center in historic Camden April 15-16. Top musicians from around the country will be joined by regional and local talent Friday evening and all day Saturday. An exhibition of hand-crafted guitars and jazz memorabilia rounds out the event.

A rare retrospective
South Carolina native Robert Courtright's art is frequently featured in international museums and galleries, but rarely exhibited in his home state. The Myrtle Beach Art Museum is one of just two S.C. venues to showcase this major retrospective Robert Courtright: Collages, Collage Constructions and Masks, 1953-2008. The exhibition runs now through April 28.

Pasta With Ground Beef and Tomatoes
The chili-style tomatoes and Cajun seasoning give this ground beef and pasta dish an extra burst of flavor. I used cavatappi in this recipe, but macaroni, mini penne, or similar pasta will work just as well. This makes a great everyday family meal.

Strawberry Coffee Cake
This delicious coffee cake is made with fresh sliced strawberries and a buttery crumb topping. Make this cake to take along to a morning get-together or make it for a breakfast or brunch treat.

Braised Pork Chops With Orange
These braised pork chops are super easy to prepare in the skillet. Just brown the onions and chops, add the remaining ingredients, and simmer for about an hour. Feel free to use balsamic or white wine vinegar in place of the red wine vinegar.

Roasted Chicken Quarters With Herbs
The combination of lemon and herbs, along with a generous amount of garlic, help make this easy baked chicken extra-flavorful. It's a great dish to serve for an everyday family meal, or make it for Sunday dinner.
