You might soon experience some of the shortest days of your life. That may sound scary, but it's really just an oddity relating to Earth's rotation. Over the past few years, our planet has been overall spinning faster on its axis, to the point that timekeeping experts have said our clocks might have to skip a second around 2029. In the shorter term, the quicker rotation means that there are a few days coming up that are expected to be shorter than 24 hours by about a millisecond. So if July 9, July 22, and Aug. 5 feel different to you, it may because you lost a fraction of a second.

Free, AI-Powered Service Reunites Lost Pets With Their Families
Petco Love
Many Americans celebrating July Fourth can't wait to watch fireworks tomorrow night, but there's one member of the family that likely isn't quite as excited: our pups. It's no coincidence that July is National Pet Loss Prevention Month, as Independence Day and family vacations contribute to an uptick in furry friends going missing this time of year. But thankfully, Petco Love, the nonprofit arm of the pet store chain, offers a service that can help you track down your pets if the unthinkable happens — and it's free to sign up. All you have to do is upload a photo of your dog or cat to Petco Love Lost online. If they go missing, you can report your pet as lost, and the service's AI photo-matching technology will scour animal shelter databases (plus its own) to locate them. The little pup you see above is one of over 100,000 lost pets that the service has reunited with their families to date. After Ziggy bolted on a family trip, his owner Surely uploaded his picture and checked Love Lost every day — five months later, he was identified 365 miles away. "When I reunited with Ziggy, it was the most unimaginable feeling that I could have ever felt," she said in a statement shared with Nice News. "It just felt like my home was complete all over again." Watch an illustrative example of how Petco Love Lost works and register your pet for free.

Look Up! Milky Way Is Expected to Shine Extra Bright This Fourth of July Weekend

Fireworks may get lots of attention this weekend, but there's another sparkly sight up above that's beautiful in its own right (and a whole lot quieter): TheMilky Way is expected to be especially bright and clear across the sky this month. While our galaxy is generally visible year-round from most locations on Earth, it's particularly striking from February to October, also known as "Milky Way season." And according to USA Today, astronomers say July may be one of the best times in 2025 to see the swirling array of stars, planets, gas, and dust. How do you see it? The Milky Way is best seen in locations away from light pollution (cough cough, fireworks). If you're in the right spot, you won't need binoculars or telescopes to soak up the starry scene — just your eyes and a clear night. Check out a cosmic calendar of more celestial sightings this month, including an upcoming meteor shower.

In 2026, ABLE Savings Accounts Are Slated to Help an Additional 6 Million People With Disabilities

Being able to work and set money aside for big expenses may seem like a given. But for many people with disabilities, that's not an option due to a government cap of $2,000 on the amount of money someone can save while remaining eligible for government assistance. So that's where ABLE accounts come in. Available since 2016, ABLE accounts, which stand for Achieving a Better Life Experience, allow individuals with disabilities to save for ongoing expenses without compromising their disability benefits. For the past decade, the accounts were only eligible for individuals with a disability diagnosed before age 26. But next year, that threshold will include those diagnosed before age 46, expanding access to an additional 6 million people, according to Indiana State Treasurer Daniel Elliott, who administers the accounts in his state. "The fact that it used to be that individuals could only save up to $2,000 or they could lose benefits — that was really restricting a lot of families," Elliot told CBS News. "People were forced into a position where they couldn't save for their futures. Now we're seeing average account balances of [ABLE accounts] between $11,000 and $12,000." In honor of Disability Pride Month, learn more about how ABLE accounts work.

Cue the tissues: At the Minnesota Zoo, a rare wild Asian horse fell ill soon after his birth — and was sadly rejected by his mother when he returned from intensive care. But the foal's fate changed when a pony named Alice, who had recently lost her newborn, welcomed him into her life as her own. "It was really kind of a perfect fairy-tale ending. ... They just bonded like that," said Annie Rivas, the zoo's director of animal health. See the sweet duo together.
