At the NATO summit, Secretary-General Mark Rutte showed strong personal support for President Trump, even referring to him as “Daddy” while defending Trump’s blunt criticism of Israel and Iran for breaking a ceasefire. Rutte said tough language was sometimes necessary and praised Trump for striking Iran’s nuclear sites and pushing NATO members to increase defense spending. Trump’s proposal for a 5% GDP defense contribution sparked debate but gained traction, with most allies agreeing to boost spending above the previous 2.7% level. Spain received an exemption from the full increase. Rutte also commended Trump’s backing of Ukraine and emphasized the need for fair burden-sharing among NATO members. Trump reaffirmed his commitment to NATO, declaring the alliance would become stronger under his leadership.
