International fame, South Carolina roots Previously unseen works by two internationally heralded South Carolina artists are on exhibition at the Greenville County Museum of Art. Jasper Johns Prints: The First Half-Century comprises Johns' iconic imagery, including flags, numbers and targets. The exhibition runs through Feb. 13. African American artist Merton Simpson is best known for his Confrontation series, which addresses the challenges of race during the 1960s civil rights era. Works from this series are on display through March 13. Explore the State Art Collection Experience the quality and diversity of South Carolina's cultural heritage when The State Art Collection: Contemporary Conversations Part II comes to Clemson, Jan. 10 - Feb. 16. This exhibition of works by 42 South Carolina artists ranges from painting, photography, sculpture and baskets to works of clay and fabric. Plan to visit one, two or all three venues, including Clemson University's Lee Gallery, the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts and The Arts Center. J. Henry Fair's Abstract Photography Charleston native and photographer J. Henry Fair focuses his lens on the land in a new exhibition at the Gibbes Museum of Art. J. Henry Fair: Industrial Scars features brilliantly colored, abstract images of texture and pattern that resemble paintings, but are in fact large-scale aerial photographs of sites drastically affected by industry. The exhibition includes recent images of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibition runs through March 27. Marking 40 years The Franklin B. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach is exhibiting a retrospective of South Carolina artist Alex Powers' work to mark his 40th anniversary as a painter. The exhibition runs through Jan. 9.
